IEBC Clears 72 Parties for the 2022 General Elections as 10 are Locked Out

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared 72 political parties to participate in the 2022 general elections.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati says 10 other parties were locked out for failing to comply with requirements as outlined in the Elections Act and other laws.

“Only 72 were found to be compliant and will be issued with Compliance Certificates as guided by provisions of Section 27 of the Elections Act,” Chebukati said during a meeting with stakeholders on Monday.

The 10 were among the 82 political outfits that submitted their nomination rules to IEBC in October but the commission directed all the parties to file new rules after they were found to be non-compliant with requirements of the law, including the two-third gender rule.

IEBC insisted that the nomination rules must be in line with the Constitution, the Elections Act, the Political Parties Act, the Elections (Party Primaries and Party List) Regulations, 2017, and be in accordance with the Party’s Constitution.

The political parties were given until November 16th to refile revised nomination rules failure to which they will be barred from taking part in next year’s elections.

IEBC is yet to release a list of the compliant and non-compliant parties.
