Alarm as Drug-Resistant 'Super Gonorrhea' Spreads in Nairobi

Medical researchers in Nairobi have discovered a strain of super gonorrhea that is resistant to most drugs used to treat the STI, according to reports.

The drug-resistant gonorrhea was isolated from a sample taken from one of 24 sick sex workers from Nairobi last year, The Star reports.

The discovery was made by Amina Abdullahi, a researcher from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri), who said most of the sick women did not even have the clinical symptoms of gonorrhea.

The finding could mean an unknown number of Kenyans are carrying an almost incurable infection that can cause significant health problems, including permanent damage to the reproductive system.

The Kemri researcher tested the isolated bacterium against 13 antimicrobials comprising the mainstay antibiotics for the disease in Kenya.

“The result showed complete (100 percent) resistance to all the antimicrobials,” she stated.

Ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone, which are in the current STI treatment algorithm in Kenya, are the drugs that failed.

“The finding from the present study shows possible multidrug-resistant gonorrhea circulating among female sex workers in Nairobi, which is of concern,” Abdullahi added.

Super gonorrhea is a strain of the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae that has developed resistance to antibiotics commonly used to treat the infection.

This strain of the bacteria has an enzyme called antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) that can neutralize antibiotics, making it more difficult to treat.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated it as a “priority pathogen” due to the increasing resistance to antibiotics.

Symptoms of super gonorrhea include a burning sensation during urination, discharge from the genitals, and pain in the lower abdomen. In some cases, there may be no symptoms at all.

If left untreated, super gonorrhea can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and even sepsis.

The best way to prevent the spread of super gonorrhea is through the use of condoms during sex and regular testing.

Is all that worth risking one's life for:Sex? Even if you dont follow what the Good book admonishes, shouldn't just commonsense tell you on how to behave. For example,if you are going to seek services from a prostitute, shouldn't you have some protection? Condoms may not protect you from all STI,but my understanding is that they are 100% protection against gonorrhea. What I cannot even begin to understand is how some men will pay more to have a condom less sex with aprostitute...
Its bad enough for a single person to deal with STI,but how do you explain to your wife that you got gonorrhea from mounting a prostitute?Especially if your wife is well respected ,God fearing, upright, and frowns upon sex work?Worse do you want to bring home an incurable disease because of your undisciplined lust?
Hahaha, now Iam ready for @Jane to attack me for advocating morality...

@ Jane, I acknowledge that Iam shezi kabisa( Iam not the brighest hombre),but surely you cannot deny that what Iam saying is good advise for mankind.Especially with a hedonic and ignominious man.I am not going to say your man because over the years, I have acquired some measure of equanimity,to avoid base less claims or attacks on people I do not know. That's how I maintain my Ushenzi.,and wear it proudly.

@maxiley / you sound to have a lot if experience with prostitutes. What did you tell your significant other - man or woman - where you collected that deadly disease?. And how do you protect others if you cannot even protect your own ass?

For those who are in disagreement with @Max,you should reconsider what he is saying where he follow is or not.For one thing ,you cannot tell either way.My question to you,if you are married, wouldn't want your hubby to bring home some STD he caught from a Malaya? Yeah, I hear you saying not my husband. To that I say he is good till not good...No husband is exempt... when conditions are right.

Antibiotics are OVER prescribed in Kenya.....even for common cold - over and over. Doctors don;t even think twice,,,,and pharmacy staff dish the same to the ignorant millions who go to the pharmacy for diagnosis. It;s kinda worrying. Overuse of antibiotics = antibiotics resistance. Majuu you get them ONLY by prescription from a doctor.
Our dear prezo, hear this one too.

@ Justme,I have never understood why there is no apparent regulations, knowing the dangers or liberal supply of "prescription drugs".Definitely this could lead to abuse and misuse.Does the government want the situation to reach a "critical Mass" before they act?
