A third-year student at Maseno University was on Monday shot dead by police officers during anti-government protests in Kisumu.
William Manyange was among a group of protestors who took to the streets on Monday to participate in the demos called by the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.
The protests turned violent after protesters invaded a supermarket in Maseno town, according to a police report of the incident.
Police said the rioters overpowered the security officers who had run out of teargas canisters.
As a result, officers started firing live bullets to repulse the protestors who allegedly invaded the retail store.
The student was in the process shot in the neck and was rushed to Coptic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Six police officers were reportedly injured during the skirmishes where protestors also lit bonfires and barricaded the Kisumu-Busia highway before engaging law enforcement officers in a running battle.
