A 16-year-old girl from Homa Bay was last week thrilled to act as Ireland's ambassador to Kenya for a day
Sheryl, a girl advocate affiliated with Plan International, assumed this role with the support of her 14-year-old colleague, Patience, from Machakos County. The experience left a profound impact on Sheryl who remarked on the importance of self-confidence and seizing opportunities when they arise. During their time at the Irish embassy, Sheryl and Patience, both participants in Plan International's child sponsorship program, were immersed in the day-to-day operations of diplomatic work. Their responsibilities included chairing meetings with senior management and gaining insights into various portfolios.
The young leaders also engaged in activities related to the empowerment of girls and youth, a key focus of the Irish embassy's work in Kenya. For Sheryl, the journey to Nairobi and her first experience flying in an aeroplane was particularly memorable. She expressed disbelief at the opportunity presented to her just three weeks ago. Sheryl took the opportunity to encourage her peers, urging them to pursue their ambitions fearlessly despite potential obstacles. The challenges faced by girls in Sheryl's community were brought to the forefront during her tenure as ambassador.
She highlighted issues such as inadequate menstrual hygiene management, limited access to education, poverty, sexual and reproductive health concerns, and discrimination. Sheryl particularly emphasized the financial barriers that often prevent girls from accessing formal education in her society. Evelyn Maris, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland in Kenya, reflected on the historical underrepresentation of women in leadership roles.
She expressed hope that the visibility of women in key positions at the embassy would inspire the young ambassadors. Maris also commended Plan International for their efforts in amplifying the voices of young girls. The event at the Irish embassy is part of a broader initiative to empower young women and equip them with the skills and confidence necessary for leadership roles.
