Chaos Rock Kisumu as Youths Demonstrate to Oppose Raila's 'One Term Presidency'

Chaos marred Kisumu on Thursday as youth demonstrated to oppose plans of making National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga a one term President if he wins the August 8th elections.

One of the organizers who declined to be mentioned said that ODM head office was aware of the demonstration to advocate 10 years for Odinga.

A team of young men donning T-Shirts christened “Raila 10 Years” demonstrating along Oginga Odinga Street in Kisumu were forced to engage another team of ODM youths who were opposed to their calls, an ugly incident ensuing thereafter.

Kisumu Central ODM Chairman Seth Ochieng who led the rival group said that ODM was not informed there was going to be such a demonstration.

The leader termed the move as by the youth a scheme to sow seeds of discord among NASA affiliate parties ahead of the coming polls.

“As ODM we are all aware that Raila signed an MoU with the principals that he is going for presidency for five years. We know this is a scheme by our opponents to scuttle our unity in NASA,” he said.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga, who is also a sister to Raila Odinga condemned those behind the demonstration and lauded the youths who scuttled the demonstrators.

“I applauded the people of Kisumu who came out to scuttle this process, this is the kind of guarding our votes,” she said.

Under Nasa power agreement, Raila Odinga would serve as the President for only one term and leave it to other Nasa co-principals to battle it out for the top seat in the 2022 General Election.
