United Nations Rejects Raila's Request to Audit Election Results

The United Nations has declined to admit Raila Odinga's request for UN to carry out an audit of the August 8th general election results.

Through spokesman Farhan Haq UN said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' recent call urging Kenyan political leaders to bring election-related disputes to “the relevant constitutionally mandated institutions.” was the body's stand on Kenyan elections.

This gives indications that the UN is unlikely to conduct a review of the elections outcome as proposed by NASA supremo Raila Odinga in an interview with London's Financial Times last week.

Haq in a press briefing further said that the UN will closely monitor Odinga's expected major announcement on election outcome.

Raila was expected to make the announcement on Tuesday, but postponed to Wednesday, citing ongoing consultations within the opposition coalition.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati declared president Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of last week's election after garnering 8,203,290 votes, while his main rival rival Raila Odinga of Nasa got 6,762,224 votes.

Raila declined to concede defeat citing manipulation of election results to hand President Uhuru the win.
