Dr Gakuru passed away on Tuesday morning following a fatal road accident at Kabati area along the Thika-Kenol Highway.
The Governor was rushed to Thika Level 5 hospital for treatment and was set to be flown to Nairobi for further treatment before he was pronounced dead.
"I have learnt with profound shock of the death of the Nyeri Governor, Dr Wahome Gakuru, following a tragic road accident at Kabati. My family and I, and the National Government send our deepest condolences and sympathies to the late Governor Gakuru’s family and his Nyeri constituents."
"Nyeri and the country have been robbed of a great promise with the demise of Dr Gakuru, a committed, visionary and tireless leader."
"The National Government stands with Governor Gakuru's family and the people of Nyeri, and will offer all the support necessary at this time. I last saw Governor Gakuru a few months ago during the Nyeri Agricultural Show. He was full of vigour, and eager to serve the people of Nyeri and the country. It is sad that he is now gone. Let's stay strong and keep the faith. May God give us solace, assurance and peace," President Uhuru said in a statement.
Deputy President William Ruto described him as an energetic and visionary leader.
"Dr Gakuru was an energetic, conscientious, shrewd leader who had great vision for his constituents and the nation. We grieve with the family, friends and the people of Nyeri County following the passing on of Governor Wahome Gakuru," He said.
Retired President Mwai Kibaki described Gakuru's death as a great loss to the people of Nyeri.
"I had so much hope and faith in what Governor Gakuru would have done for the people of Nyeri and indeed the citizens of Kenya," said Kibaki in a statement.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, Council of Governors, Nasa principal Moses Wetangula are other leaders who also sent their condolence messages to the family of Gakuru and people of Nyeri.

So sad. Government should identify all the country's hotspots and invest in safety features. For instance, cover all exposed guard-rails with rubber cushions/drums, etc...similar to roads in U.S.
