First Year JKUAT Student Commits Suicide in University Hostel

A first-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) tragically lost his life by suicide on Saturday night in the university hostel.

The family has confirmed this devastating news. Joseph Muoki Nzau, the grieving father, reveals a lengthy conversation with his son just before the incident. Their talk concluded with the son retrieving his laptop from the hostel room with the intention of returning home. However, he never reappeared.

“It's beyond comprehension,” Nzau shares “We had a long conversation, and I asked him to get his laptop so we could leave for home together. But he never came back… he jumped from the fourth floor.”

According to an unnamed student leader, the deceased had been struggling with emotional distress. This prompted the father to visit his son at the university after receiving texts expressing his despair. The student also reportedly indicated a lack of financial aid, including government funding or scholarships. Witnesses reported that the student was pronounced dead at the hospital on Saturday evening around 8 pm.

The university and the police have yet to release official statements regarding the incident. The student's body has been transferred to the Thika Level 5 Hospital morgue and awaits an autopsy. In a separate incident, the quiet Raila village in Langata constituency was on Wednesday rocked by a devastating tragedy that claimed the life of a promising young student. Brian Ongwae, 22, was a student at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).

However, a fateful decision to gamble away his school fees of Sh 15,000 in the hopes of multiplying the sum proved to be a grave misstep. After losing his tuition money, Ongwae retreated into a solitary and troubled state. Neighbours grew increasingly concerned as they overheard him engage in what seemed to be a one-sided conversation with an unknown party. Fearing for his well-being, they ultimately decided to investigate, only to be met with the harrowing sight of Ongwae's lifeless body suspended from the rooftop.

Very sad mental health issues seem to a problem in Kenya these days.It was very rare to read or hear of suicides when I was growing up in Kenya.
