Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Generation Z to continue advocating for their rights, following a significant reconciliatory meeting with President William Ruto.
Speaking at the funeral of veteran rally driver Kibathi Muigai, Uhuru emphasized the increasing political engagement of Kenya's youth, marking his first substantial political statement since leaving office in 2022. Uhuru's remarks came against a backdrop of rising concerns over the safety of young activists, particularly in light of a series of abductions targeting individuals critical of the government on social media.
In December alone, six youths were reported abducted, including Kibet Bull, known for his viral memes featuring President Ruto. During his address, Uhuru identified fear as a major barrier hindering the youth's ability to assert their rights. He urged the younger generation, including his daughter Ngina Kenyatta, to actively engage in the pursuit of their rightful entitlements.
"Gen Zs are the future. Fight for your rights and ensure you get what is rightfully yours," he proclaimed, suggesting it was time for older generations to step aside.
This statement comes after a meeting on December 9 at Uhuru's Ichaweri home, where he and President Ruto discussed strengthening ties within Mt. Kenya following the dismissal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Subsequent to this meeting, several of Uhuru's allies were appointed to the Cabinet, including Lee Kinyajui as Trade Secretary, William Kabogo as ICT Secretary, and Mutahi Kagwe as Agriculture Secretary.
Uhuru's name was previously linked to financing protests led by Gen Z last year, but such claims have yet to be substantiated.
