Raila's Daughter Joins NASA Supporters During Anti-IEBC Protests

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's daughter, Winnie shocked many on Monday when she turned up for anti-Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) demonstrations.

Winnie joined opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters in the protests along Kenyatta avenue in Nairobi and addressed them later at a gathering.

" Nimeona leo mmejitokeza kwa wingi, asante sana (I have seen that today you have come out in large numbers, thank you very much)," Ms Odinga said.

The demonstrators cheered her as she addressed them, and urged her to tell the former Prime Minister to grace the protests. Raila has been skipping the protests, sending Siaya senator James Orengo and other Nasa leaders to represent him.

She called on supporters to turn out in large numbers for the next demos on Wednesday and Friday.

" Tuendele hivo Wednesday na Friday na Monday next week hadi IEBC waende nyumbani (Let's turn out on Wednesday, Friday and Monday next week until IEBC officials go home)," she rallied.

Unlike her sister Rosemary, Winnie has maintained a low profile and has only been seen a few times during NASA events.

In a recent interview, Winnie said that the worst part of having Raila as her father is the attention that comes with his being her daughter.

"I hate it. It holds me back. I can't get to have a private life and taking pictures the whole time is not quite what I consider having a good time," she revealed.

She said she supports her father through all means and even sometimes drives him.

"I work for my dad. I'm his bodyguard, his briefcase carrier, travel companion and even his driver if need be. I sit in meetings where I'm the only female and everyone is above 40 years of age. You can see through their looks that they disapprove of my look and my accent but you can't impress everyone," she told Pulse magazine.
