John Wanjohi Dec 02, 2017

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr has sponsored a Bill seeking to have amendments introduced to the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act to allow any Kenyan to fly the national flag at their residence, work place or business.

Mutual noted that the national flag is a symbol of national unity and should not be used to distinguish individuals in the country.

“Yes I proposed the amendments because the flag should not be used to distinguish people but rather it is a symbol of National Unity,” said Kilonzo.

The Wiper Party senator said that Kenyans willing to hoist the flag at their residences, businesses, work place, during public functions should be allowed to do so.

“I proposed this bill before the elections in order to avoid the divisions the country is currently facing. Every Kenyan identifies with the flag,” he added.

Currently, ordinary Kenyans are not allowed to use the national flag at their will. The flag is mostly hoisted in public institutions, schools, embassies, police stations and during state functions. The president and cabinet members are the only officials allowed to fly the flag on their vehicles.
