Deputy President Ruto Elected to Represent Kenya, Africa in Global Governance Body

Deputy President William Ruto has been elected to a global governance body where he will represent both Kenya and Africa.

Ruto will serve for three years in the Steering Committee of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), a governance body that brings together government leaders and civil society advocates with an aim of promoting accountable, inclusive, and responsive governance through access to public information, civic participation, and innovation among others.

OGP whose membership consists of 78 countries and 20 local governments was established in 2011 under the leadership of the 44th US President Barack Obama.

Kenya was elected to the OGP Steering Committee alongside Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

“We are pleased to announce that the governments of Canada, Italy, and Kenya have been elected by their peers to three-year terms on the OGP Steering Committee beginning on October 1,” the OGP announced.

The election will enable the government of Kenya to showcase its transparency to the world.

“Kenya also stands to benefit as this leadership gives the country the platform needed to promote OGP principles of transparency, civic participation and use of technology beyond the current 13 members of OGP on the continent,” said Dr. Korir Sing’oei, a Legal Adviser at DP Ruto’s office.

Ruto will also provide guidance to 13 African countries on how to implement OGP’s global campaign “Open Recovery + Open Response.”

They include Nigeria, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, and Morocco.

“Ruto will serve together with other high-level government representatives from Canada, France, Argentina, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Nigeria, Romania, and South Korea,” Sing’oei added.
