Family Demands Answers Over Son's Mysterious Death at Kenol Police Station

Murang’a police have identified the man who allegedly died by suicide inside the operations room at Kenol Police Station on August 5 as 35-year-old Stephen Mwangi.

Police say Mwangi secretly entered the secure room and took his own life using charging cables. But his father, John Muiruri, strongly disputes this claim. He says the police story does not match the layout of the station or his son’s character.

Muiruri has called the account a “fairy tale,” questioning how his son could have entered such a restricted area without being noticed. The operations room contains sensitive equipment and is normally locked to the public, yet police have not explained how Mwangi could have accessed it.

The family’s suspicions grew after police offered to pay for Mwangi’s post-mortem and burial. Muiruri believes this was an attempt to prevent an independent investigation.

The family rejected the offer and, with help from human rights groups, is arranging their own private forensic examination to find out the truth. Murang’a South police commander Charity Karimi insists that early findings point to suicide. Muiruri has officially asked the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take over the investigation to ensure fairness and transparency.
