Anne Waiguru Elected Council of Governors Chairperson
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been elected the new Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson, becoming the first female governor to hold the post.
Waiguru, who successfully defended her seat in the August 9th general election on a UDA party ticket, will be deputised by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi while Nandi’s Stephen Sang takes over as the Chief Whip.
Lobbying, negotiations, and finally consensus ensured that Waiguru becomes the new CoG chairperson, beating her Kajiado counterpart Joseph Ole Lenku of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition.
The election was held on Saturday following a three-day induction for the newly elected governors and deputy governors in Mombasa.
Waiguru is the sixth CoG Chairperson since the onset of devolution in 2013. The other CoG chairs were Bomet’s Isaac Ruto (2013-2015), Meru’s Peter Munya (2015-2017), Turkana’s Josphat Nanok (2017-2019), Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya (2019-2021) and Embu’s Martin Wambora (2021-2022).
