Kenyan Ambassador Receives High-Profile Irish Military Reception

Kenya's ambassador to Ireland, Tabu Irina, recently experienced a unique display of respect as she presented her credentials to President Michael Higgin.

Sporting a green robe embellished with the flag of Kenya, the diplomat was captured in a picture with two military personnel inspecting the ceremonial squad. Though this custom may not be widely observed around the world, it is customary for ambassadors posted in Ireland. The Irish Defence Forces clarify that the guard of honour is a gesture of respect extended to esteemed guests when they present their official documents.

Typically, this exclusive treatment is reserved for visiting dignitaries in leadership positions. The armed forces have specified that guards of honour are exclusively deployed during state or military occasions of national significance. In certain countries like China, there exists a particular ceremonial protocol for welcoming ambassadors. On the designated day, the President's Office coordinates the provision of a chauffeured car to collect the ambassador.

Upon their arrival at the Presidential Office Building, the ambassador exits the vehicle at the Main Entrance and proceeds to observe the guard of honour and band. The Office of the President for the Republic of China clarifies that this customary practice involves a tri-service guard of honour comprising troops and a military band, led by the major of the honor guard. Irina, who was designated as ambassador by President William Ruto in November 2023, assumed the role from her predecessor Michael Mubea.
