US Embassy Issues Security Alert Ahead of June 25 Protests

Martin Olage Jun 19, 2026

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has advised American citizens in Kenya to take extra precautions ahead of nationwide demonstrations planned for 25 June.

In a security alert issued on 18 June, the embassy warned that the protests could cause major traffic disruptions, congestion and roadblocks, particularly in Nairobi’s Central Business District and other urban areas. It noted that both demonstrators and police may set up barriers, creating unpredictable conditions for motorists.

The embassy urged US citizens to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place, remain alert and follow local media reports for updates. It also advised travellers to keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed, inform family and friends of their movements, review personal security plans and carry essential documents, including a valid Kenyan visa and a copy of a US passport.

The demonstrations are being organised to mark the anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests. The date has become a day of remembrance for people who lost their lives during the unrest.

On 18 June, Siaya Governor James Orengo, activist Boniface Mwangi, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and Martha Karua led a symbolic march to Parliament. Accompanied by families of victims, they presented a formal notification to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja outlining plans for a peaceful march on 25 June and calling for the date to be declared a public holiday.

The government has also taken steps to address concerns arising from previous demonstrations. On 15 June, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights presented a reparations framework at State House Nairobi to compensate victims of human rights violations recorded between 2017 and 2024.

The commission said it has documented 1,815 claims and expects compensation payments to begin next week. The embassy said that demonstrations can occur at any time but noted that the risk of protests is higher around the anniversary of the 2024 events.
