Raila: We Won't Allow President Uhuru's Re-election to Stand

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has vowed to resist the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta, while dismissing claims that he is "hungry for power."

Speaking during an interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday, the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader said that he is only fighting for democracy and that that should not be misunderstood to being power-hungry.

"Raila Odinga is not power-hungry. I want to see democracy properly established in our country. Currently, we have autocracy where elections are just a ritual incumbents do after every five years," he said.

Raila said that if President Kenyatta's re-election in the October 26th repeat poll is allowed to stand, it will set a bad precedent in Kenya and the whole of Africa.

"We want to be the people who will do away with rigging in Africa to show Africans deserve a better standard than."

"Next time there will be complete voter apathy in this country...No Kenyan will turn up to vote. There are countries where only 10 or 20 per cent of people turned up to vote and the president got 98 per cent of the vote because he was running alone."

"Is this how elections should be held in Africa? Why should Africa be judged on a lower standard than the rest of the world in conducting elections?"

He ruled out seeking legal redress to challenge President Uhuru's declaration and lamented attacks on the Judiciary by government forces.

"They (judges) have been disparaged...they have been called names....they have been called traitors, crooks and criminals...," Raila said.

"We want a vibrant democracy in our country. We don't want imposition of leadership on people and a collapse of our democracy," he said.

He also dismissed Jubilee for calling for his retirement, adding he will retire at his own will. "My retirement package is in the constitution and the law. I don't need any kind of favoritism because they refused to give me my retirement package after serving as Prime Minister."

How come this thief (Raila) is the only one who understands democracy? How come the NRM followers are the only ones thinking Kenya is undemocratic? Kenya has 42 communities and it defeats logic when you have only one community trying to destabilize the livelihoods of the rest. Raila must be a mental case and should be taken to Mathare with urgency. You are challenging the same institutions you set up. Damn you.

I do not want him to fight for my children, he is not their role model. I teach my children to respect other people's choices, to concede when defeated with Grace, to be diplomatic and not to use weak people as a stepping stone to achieve selfish desires and wishes. So no I do not want Raila to fight for my children.

As a Nation, the first principle of democracy is the fundamental right of individual life and pursuit of happiness; and the right of the people to choose their leaders through one man one vote. As individuals, our primary duty in a democratic society is to respect the constitution and rule of law as established and implemented through constitutional institutions. Thus, one can't purport to say that s/he is fighting for democracy when they have no respect for the constitution and rule of law to concede when the sovereign people exercise their democratic right to choose a different leader than them. Elections are competitions for socio-political leadership at various levels created by the constitution to facilitate the will of the people. Therefore, anyone who doesn't accept defeat at electoral polls can't truthfully claim he is fighting for democracy or more importantly for us and our future generations. As @formerlyguest2 has eloquently stated, an evil demagogue who steps on the backs of poverty stricken helpless illiterates or worse swims in the blood of innocent Wananchi in order to achieve his insantiable greed for presidency, can't be fighting for our democracy leave alone for the future of our children. As with all evil creatures in the history of planet Earth, he is only fighting for his evil ambitions ..... and the rational sovereign people of Kenya will NEVER honor him with such a privilege.

This con man is deliberately skewing the truth. There was no voter apathy but plenty of voter intimidation which was instigated by him and his goons. Very useless loser.
