Kenyan Woman Who Begged for Job in Nairobi Streets Now Working at Facebook

A Kenyan woman who paraded herself on the streets of Nairobi three years ago begging for a job has been hired by Facebook.

A photo of Claudia Jematia carrying a placard written “kindly give me a job” went viral on social media in 2017, triggering mixed reactions.

She listed her impressive academic qualifications on the placard including a Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Security & Digital Forensics (UK), MSc in Cyber Security (GCHQ Certified), and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

It appears like Jematia’s bold attempt to look for a job paid off as she is now working at Facebook as a global IT security engineer for Africa.

“Successful first day as a Global IT Security Engineer for Africa at Facebook. I’m very grateful to have finally found a new home here. I look forward to working with so many brilliant people to make Facebook better, especially in these times. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen,” Jematia said after landing the job earlier this year.

Her role at Facebook includes monitoring and assessing open source information and events using advanced techniques and proprietary systems to contribute to a 24/7 tactical, monitoring, and intelligence picture as directed by business stakeholders.

On her LinkedIn page, Jematia describes herself as having a considerable amount of knowledge in “project management, information security, network security, cloud forensics, host-based forensics, information risk management, identity fraud detection, penetration testing, security audit, compliance, and E-security.”

Kenya should continue to make a play for the global start up economy. There are a lot of big money venture capitalists ( investors from wall street and silicone valley) that are looking to invest in viable start up companies and emerging companies in high tech. This can be an important source of Jobs and revenue for the country. Of course the main ingredients for this sector is good education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. Especially graduate and post graduate education in these fields. Israel has done a really good job in this sector over the last 20 years and it has really enabled their economy to thrive.
