MP Babu Owino Freed on Bail after Spending Two Nights in Custody
Paul Ongili, the Embakasi East Member of Parliament popularly referred as Babu Owino has on Wednesday afternoon been released by court on bail after pleading not guilty to three counts of subversion, offensive conduct and incitement to violence.
The Orange Democratic Movement MP was freed on a cash bail of Ksh. 500,000 after spending two nights in police custody.
Following deliberations, High Court Judge Francis Andayi ruled that the prosecution did not present compelling reasons to keep him locked up.
The youthful MP was taken in by police on Monday for making insulting remarks reportedly directed at President Uhuru at a National Super Alliance rally in Nairobi's Kawangware area on Sunday.
The subversion charge carries a 7 year jail term, which could lead to him losing his parliamentary seat.
