Uhuru Signs IEBC Amendment Bill of 2019 into Law

President Kenyatta has signed into law the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Bill, 2019.

The bill was presented to Kenyatta for signature at State House on Wednesday by solicitor-general Ken Ogeto, Senate Speaker Lusaka, and his National Assembly counterpart Justin Muturi.

The new piece of legislation provides the criteria for the hiring of IEBC commissioners and outlines the qualifications of members of the selection panel.

It also establishes a selection panel to oversee the filling up of vacant positions at the electoral body and future appointments to the commission.

At the same time, Uhuru assented to the County Outdoor Advertising Control Bill of 2020.

The law seeks to provide a uniform licensing system across all the 47 county governments due to the rising importance of outdoor advertising as a major source of revenue counties.

The act further aims at streamlining outdoor advertising in counties by striking a balance between commercial, environmental, and public safety.
