Raila Reacts to "Shithole" Remarks by US President Donald Trump

John Wanjohi Jan 14, 2018

National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga has demanded that United States President Donald Trump retracts and apologises over his racial remarks, where he reportedly called African nations and Haiti as “shithole countries”

In a statement to the media, the opposition leader said the racial slur made by the American Head of State is troubling and unfortunate and demanded he “unequivocally” apologize for his actions.

“The remarks made by President Trump are part of a growing habit by a president who has never missed an opportunity to bully and disparage particularly poor nations,” the statement reads in part.

Odinga further termed the remarks as deeply hypocritical, stating that Trump ignored the fact that United States corporations have camped in African countries and are making billions of dollars which they send back to America.

“Recent media reports indicate that President Trump views Africa as a market for US goods and services and is keen to slow down on issues of democracy and human rights in pursuit of trade in Africa. Africa cannot be a market and a nothing at the same time,” the statement reads.

“Mr. Trump must equally be reminded that many of the poverty and governance related problems that keep Africa down result directly or indirectly from US foreign policies and interference,” the statement added.

Raila urged all African leaders to rise and stand up for Africa’s dignity by demanding an apology from Trump.
